TECH ALERT - Image web optimization

DATE: June 18, 2025
TO: All iMIS Solution Providers and Clients
SUBJECT: Important change – Image web optimization
VERSION: iMIS EMS 20.3.205

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhance the iMIS user experience, iMIS EMS 20.3.205 includes a new feature that will significantly boost website performance and responsiveness. To help pages load faster and reduce data transfer, images stored in the iMIS document system will be automatically web-optimized without any visible loss in image quality in a one-time optimization process. This update is part of a broader initiative to improve iMIS performance, building on recent enhancements, such as optimized menus and faster page loads.

This optimization process for images uploaded before the .205 upgrade will begin rolling out during off-peak hours on a to-be-determined date in the future, ensuring a smooth transition that should not be noticeable to users.

The following file types will be optimized: .JPG, .JPEG, .PNG, and .WEBP. New uploads of these image types will automatically be optimized. Other image formats, such as .BMP and .TIF, are not affected. The optimization process preserves the original format and dimensions and applies to all .JPG, .JPEG, .PNG, and .WEBP images, regardless of file size, aspect ratio, dimensions, or other factors.

This example shows a crop of a larger image before and after web optimization:

Important! To keep full-resolution versions of your images, download and save them outside of the iMIS Image Manager before June 30, 2025. The optimization process will start after June 30, and only optimized images will be retained.

To download images, go to RiSE > Document system and click the images folder. Choose an image, then click Download.

Do you have instructions on how to backup our images outside the iMIS Image Manager?

    Hi Jason,

Under RiSE >> Document system, you can scroll down to see the 'images' folder.

Highlight each folder you would like to 'backup' and click the [Export] button at the top of the window.

You will be prompted with a window that has a checkbox to select 'Export children as well?' Leaving this checked will download all images in that folder to an xml file onto your local PC's downloads folder. You can then move that file some place safe in case you need it. To restore, you would use the Import button at the top of the Document system window and select that xml file.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi, Melissa,

Once it is backed up to an XML file, how could the original-quality images be recovered? I suspect that iMIS will just optimize them while importing them, so the unmodified original would still be lost.

We are working with clients on this approach:
    * Create an IQA query against DocumentMain for all affected images, including the path and filename in the output
    * Construct the direct URL to each image
    * Use wget or fetch or Invoke-WebRequest to download each item in the list to a local path.

A spreadsheet is one way to generate all the needed commands.

Is there a guide available for what standards will be used for the web image optimization--file size, image dimensions, resolution, format, aspect ratio, etc.?
